Behind the screens of the St Nicholas Church

The decay and rebuilding of one of the oldest churches of Ghent

The St Nicholas Church on the Corn Market has a tragic but incredibly rich history. Follow our guide and learn the story of its construction and of the restoration that lasted decades.

More about this tour

What is so unique about the St Nicholas Church? The imposing shape, built bit by bit from the twelfth century onwards, is a supreme example of Scheldt Gothic style. The church boasts a unique 76-metre high cross tower that allows the light in as through a lantern. After a long period of neglect, decay and mutilation it was decided in 1960 to close the church and start a thorough and accurate restoration process. The completion of this work is scheduled for 2022 but with our guide you can admire the beauty of the building this very day.
